How to Love the Skin You're In
With Time Comes Perspective
If there’s anyone that understands how difficult it can be to love the skin you’re in, it’s me. I remember the days when I used to beat myself up and put plans aside because I wasn’t at my goal weight. It’s so funny because I look back at those moments and think to myself, “Are you dumb?” I was so focused on what could’ve been that I never stopped to appreciate the abundance of what I actually had! A beautiful well functioning body with literally no issues whatsoever. Is that a blessing or what? Learning to love yourself is a journey. My hope is that you can start to take the time to truly see and appreciate all that you have, so today I’m sharing tips on how to love the skin you’re in!
1. Eliminate Triggers
Loving the skin you’re in requires eliminating the things in your life that brings you down. That includes the the people around you, the media you consume, and the places you frequent. If you have a friend who’s constantly degrading you, move on. If you’re scrolling through Instagram consuming content that makes you feel unhappy about yourself, unfollow. If you find yourself in spaces where you feel unwelcome or undervalued, remove yourself. Life is too short to deal with the startling consequences of negative energy that can be easily avoided. Instead, try hanging out with people that energize you, following people on social media who make you feel confident, and visiting places that give you life! You’ll be surprised at how much happier you’ll feel about yourself and life in general.
2. Do the Work
It doesn’t just happen. Like all things in life, loving the skin you’re in requires work. Everything is connected, so it’s extremely important that you listen to your body and follow it’s lead. Pay attention to how the food you consume makes you feel. Understand what’s going on inside by visiting your doctors regularly. Move your body and engage in physical activity that makes you feel confident and happy. Take time out of your day to appreciate all that your body has moved you through. Rest when you’re tired, and hit the ground running once you’re renewed!
3. What Makes You Different Makes You Beautiful
Why fit in when you can stand out? Since entering my twenties, I’ve come to realize that life in the western world makes it really easy to view your life through the lens of others. We’re taught what’s “socially acceptable” at a really young age by adults that were handed the same outdated playbook that we were. It’s almost like we’re trained to fit in. Go to school, get good grades, land a corporate job, go back to school, start a family - that’s what my checklist looked like and we haven’t even gotten to body image yet. Don’t eat this, don’t eat that, watch your weight, count those carbs - sound familiar? I’m here to tell you that living a fulfilling life doesn’t require landing that corporate job or counting those carbs. It requires you seeking out what happiness means to you as an individual and developing a checklist tailored to your specific needs. You don’t need to look like anyone else, obtain the same credentials, or live your life according to anyone else’s standards. Embracing your individuality and trusting yourself to forge your own path is the most important step to loving the skin you’re in.
